I was recently having dinner with a close friend, and he told me about his relationship with his father, who he described as an angry person with a lot of darkness in him. He went on to say that sometimes, when he’s having a bad day, he sees his father in himself and he feels guilty about the darkness that lives within him.
This got me thinking about the times when I’m not at my best, when my own inner darkness comes out. The times when I’m impatient and stressed, which leads me to be less friendly than usual, or when I’m fighting with my boyfriend and I lose my cool.
Here’s something important that I’ve learned: there is lightness AND darkness in all of us. Life is about journeying through the good, the bad, and the ugly of who you are! You must explore and understand your darkness (pity party anyone?) but, ultimately, it’s so important that you choose and nurture the lightness within.
In the same way that living authentically is a choice that you have to make every day, all day long, living in a state of lightness is also a choice.
